BUJUMBURA, 25 February (IRIN) - Francine Nijimbere relies entirely on her mother for basic things like bathing and eating. Her husband cut off her arms up to the elbows in 2004, for failing to give birth to a boy. She was pregnant at the time and lost the baby due to her injuries, which included cuts on her stomach.

Experts Fears...

Experts fear older women are ditching contraception in the mistaken belief that they cannot get pregnant past a certain age.

                          

The Family Planning Association (FPA) believes the message on infertility and age has gone "too far".

Although fertility does wane, women can still get pregnant well into their thirties, forties and even fifties.

Abortion rates for women aged 40 to 44 match those for the under 16s, figures for England and Wales show.

 

In 2008, both of these groups had an abortion rate of four per 1,000 women. There are many reasons why some women opt for an abortion - including birth abnormalities in the baby, which are more common when the mothers are older.

South African President New Baby Rumours

South African President Jacob Zuma, who has three wives, has admitted fathering a child with the daughter of a football executive after days of speculation.

In a statement, he dismissed as "mischievous" criticism from activists who said his actions had undermined official HIV/Aids campaigns.
He said he had done all the "cultural imperatives" by formally acknowledging responsibility and paternity.
Mr Zuma, who has 19 children, is a Zulu, a group which practises polygamy.
'Sex-addict' gibe
The 67-year-old leader confirmed in a statement that he was having a relationship with Sonono Khoza - the 39-year-old daughter of World Cup official Irvin Khoza.
