Women for Women International:
Women for Women is an international charity dedicated to helping women who have been affected by war or civil conflicts, rebuild their lives. The charity supports women in; Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda and Sudan.
What do they do?
Women for Women International work with women who may have lost everything in conflict and often have nowhere else to turn. The aim of the one year program is to put women on a journey from being victims to being survivors. Women enter the sponsorship program where direct financial aid from a sponsor helps them deal with the immediate effects of war and conflict such as lack of food, water, medicine and other necessities.

As their situations begin to stabilize, women in our program begin building a foundation for their lives as survivors. While continuing to receive sponsorship support women embark on the next leg of the journey and participate in the Renewing Women’s Life Skills Program which builds upon existing skills and helps them to learn new ones in order to regain their strength, stability and stature on the path to becoming active citizens.
How it works:
Women for Women International could not provide direct financial and emotional support to women living on the margins of hope without the backing of a global community of dedicated staff, volunteers, generous donors, supporters and friends.
Since it’s creation, Women for Women International has empowered over 153,000 women survivors of war to move toward economic self-sufficiency with our year-long program of direct aid, rights education, job skills training, and small business development.
Since 1993, Women for Women International has mobilized more than 125,000 women and men in 105 countries worldwide to reach out and support women survivors of war – one woman at a time.

Every once in a while a new voice emerges with the power to change the world. Zainab Salbi, activist and social entrepreneur, is such a voice. Ms. Salbi inspires and moves audiences with the passion of her personal experience as a survivor of war and her dedication to rebuilding communities after war, one woman at a time.
She has raised her voice, and thousands of women have responded to the call, to help women survivors of war rebuild their lives through her organization, Women for Women International. The Oprah Winfrey Show has featured Ms. Salbi and her organization seven times but there is still plenty that needs to be done.
