A Remarkable Woman of Worth: Anita Ruddock

Anita Ruddock was born in 1942 in Little Hampton, Sussex.
She attended a convent and in 1961 studied at the Bath College of Higher Education to train as a teacher.
After graduating Anita spent a year in Romania where she volunteered to helped with children who were affected by disabilities, war, natural disasters and HIV/Aids.
When she returned she began teaching at Little Hampton Community School and shortly afterwards she met her husband Gordon Ruddock.
In 1969 she gave birth to her first daughter Justine.

 

In 1970 the couple married and Anita left her job as a teacher to run a Restaurant/Hotel with her husband.

Biography
Sheryl Sandberg was born in Miami in Florida and taught aerobics whilst at school. In 1987 she enrolled at Harvard University and in 1991 graduated with a BA in Economics. After leaving Harvard, Sheryl moved to India to volunteer with health projects in the country. 
In 1993 she returned and enrolled at the Harvard Business School. In 1995 she earned an MBA with the highest distinction.
After business school Sheryl worked for one year as a management consultant for McKinsey and Company.
In 1996 she then moved on to serve as Chief of Staff to the United States Secretary of the Treasury Larry Summers under President Bill Clinton. Here she helped lead the Treasury’s work on forgiving debt in the developing world.
In 2001 Sheryl moved to Google which was a small 300 person start up company.

Biography
Wangari Muta Maathai was born in Nyeri, Kenya in 1940. In 1946 she moved to America to study a Bachelor of Science Degree at a University in Kansas. She then went on to study a Master of Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh in Germany. In 1966 Wangari returned to Kenya to work as a part time lecturer. It was here that she met her husband Mwangi Mathai.

Was Born Mary Jane Grant in 1805 in Kingston (Jamaica), to a free black Jamaican woman and a white Scottish Officer in the British Army. This pioneer nurse is best known for her spectacular involvement in the Crimean War. Mary was proud of her Scottish roots and very much proud to be ‘Creole’. Even if society classified her has a multiracial person with limited political rights, she overcame stereotypes that they were lazy people.

Introducing: Mary McLeod
Biography
Mary McLeod was born in 1875 in Mayesville, South Carolina.
She was the first of her siblings not to be born into slavery.
Mary attended the Trinity Mission School where she graduated and decided she wanted to continue her education.
In 1887 she began to study at the Scotia Seminary School in Concord.
In 1888 she moved to Chicago where she attended Dwight Moody’s Institute for Home and Foreign Missions where she hoped to become a missionary. She met and later married her husband Albertus Bethune.
A year later she gave birth to a son Albert.
 In 1896 after seeing how hard it was being a black woman in America Mary then formed the National Association of Colored Women.

June 22, 1918 – July 14, 2005
“You matter because you are you, and you matter to the last moment of your life.”
 Cicely Saunders was born in 1918 in Hertfordshire.In 1938 she went to Oxford University to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics. When World War II started, she decided to leave her studies to become a student nurse, however a back injury forced her to leave nursing and in 1945 she went back to Oxford University and qualified as a medical social worker. In 1947 she started working at St Thomas’s hospital and it was here she met Tasma a cancer patient who she fell in love with. After seeing the suffering, loneliness and pain that Tasma went through during his last days, Cicely decided that her mission would be to ease end of life pain.

 Biography
Evelyn Hausner was born in 1938 in Vienna but grew up in New York City.
In 1958 she graduated from Northwestern University and worked as a public school teacher.
Shortly after she met her husband Leonard Lauder on a blind date the couple married in 1959.
